The NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 Dual Band Smart WiFi Router is a large router that packs a 1Ghz dual-core processor that’s designed for large homes. It is a mid-range router that supports up to 450Mbps on the 2.4Ghz frequency band and up to 1300Mbps on the 5Ghz frequency band. It measures 11.22 x 7.26 x 1.97 in (HWD) and weighs a little over 1.6 pounds. The R6700 is part of the Nighthawk series and uses the same housing design as its bigger brother, R7000. The R6700 is very sturdy and it has a wide base with rubber feet so it won’t slip and slide all over a surface. Netgear’s nighthawk routers can be wall-mounted if space is limited. It won second place on the best wifi routers under $100 for 2020.

Netgear is using the same exterior design as the popular R7000 AC1900 Nighthawk in the R6700. The internal hardware components of the R6700 are identical to the R7000. The only difference is that the R6700 only comes with one USB 3.0 port whereas the R7000 has one front USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 port on the back. So, lets take a closer look.

Our NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 Dual Band Smart WiFi Router Review

NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 Dual Band Smart WiFi Router

The NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 Dual Band Smart WiFi Router is a dual-band 802.11ac router promising faster speeds than we’ve seen so far from triple-stream routers. Technically, the Nighthawk utilizes AC1750 protocol, giving you dual-band wireless speeds of 1,750Mbps on both bands. The 2.4Ghz frequency band (450Mbps) handles non-intensive tasks like internet browsing, while the 5HGz frequency band (1,300Mbs) is reserved for more intensive tasks like streaming or gaming.

It uses Beamforming technology which is responsible for improved wireless range and enhanced signal focus, resulting in faster connections to mobile devices. Combined with a powerful 1GHz dual-core processor, a USB 3.0 port for fast HDD access, and three detachable antennas, the Netgear R6700 is a seriously powerful piece of home networking kit.

R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 Design

The Nighthawk R6700 is identical to the original Nighthawk model, with the same housing design and color profile. Just like its bigger brother the Nighthawk R7000, the R6700 is sturdy and has a wide base with rubber feet that keep it from any surface. All of Netgear’s routers can be wall-mounted, so you don’t have to worry if you have limited space on your desk.

Netgear uses the same external and internal hardware on both the R6700 and the popular Nighthawk R7000 AC1900. The only difference between the two is that the R7000 comes with twin USB ports (one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0) whereas, the R6700 only comes with a single USB 3.0 port. Also notable is that the R6700 uses longer and thicker antennas with Beamforming+ to boost the signal range, extend signal coverage and minimize dead spot for large homes.

The antennas on the R6700 are adjustable and removable, which is better compared to the R6400’s antennas that are only adjustable but non-replaceable. While the latter keeps the cost low, it becomes expensive in case one of the antennas breaks and needs to be replaced.

As before, there is a clique of LEDs on the front panel, 12 in total, to relay the router’s status information to the user. Most of the time, a large number of lights feels like an overkill, especially with so many lights blinking on and off, but they can be switched off, especially if you want the Nighthawk to sit quietly in a corner.

Inside, the 1GHz processor is the same as what you have in most routers in the Nighthawk Series, except for the Netgear Nighthawk X4 which uses a 1.4GHz processor. The router still uses 256MB RAM and 128MB flash, as its predecessors.

R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 App

You can use Netgear’s genie App which is an easy way to manage and monitor your router. It allows you to access all the features of your router without having to boot up your computer. You can share and stream music or videos and set up parental controls and more. The genie app doesn’t work when connected to the guest network and doesn’t work with wireless extender or repeater. It’s a useful app if you want to monitor and perform maintenance and troubleshooting the router.

R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 Setup

Unboxing and setup will take about 5 minutes and should be completely effortless on your part, aside from plugging things in and finding space for the router. If you already have a combo router/modem device from your ISP, you can disable the router features on your combo device and use your combo device as a modem. See video below for more detailed instructions.

R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 WiFi Range

A router’s WiFi range depends on a lot of things, including interference from other devices nearby or on the same network and the construction materials that exist between your router and your device. I saw where one reviewer said:

“In my current 480 sq. ft. studio apartment, it’s easy to say that this thing has excellent range – but I haven’t forgotten the dead zones I used to struggle with in my 2200 sq. ft. home or my U-shaped 1100 sq. ft. apartment.

I can go several hundred feet from my window outside and up two floors in my building before I see my WiFi signal drop off. I’m on my network as in the parking garage under my unit, where presumably there is a bulk of concrete between me and the router.

Mostly what I care about is not losing signal as I move about my apartment, which my previous apartments/routers had trouble with. With this router, I can go all the way into the bathroom (with the kitchen and all its walls/appliances between the router and me) and not lose any signal strength.”

R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 Beamforming+

Most routers just emit signal in all directions. Netgear’s “Beamforming” technology locks on to connected devices and focuses signal in their direction, even as the device moves around. The result: a faster, more stable connection. Netgear’s video below explains it nicely:

NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 Dual Band Smart WiFi Router Benefits

R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 Performance

The Netgear 6700 delivers excellent storage performance. Tested via the USB 3.0 connection, the router performed well on FAT32 and NTFS formats, better than most routers in the same category. For instance, it returned impressive speeds on NTFS formats – 59.1 MB/s Read and 38.5 Write; and almost the same scores for FAT 32 files –59.8 Read and 36.9 Write. Compared, the TP-Link Archer C8 returned almost-the same scores on the same set of files: NTFS formats – 25.3 MB/s Read and 16.8 Write; FAT 32 –37.2 Read and 23.9 Write. Still, the R6700 beats its closest rivals with little effort.

The next test ought to focus on the 5Ghz throughput speed from the router to a laptop equipped with an Intel AC-7265 (2×2 802.11ac) Wi-Fi adapter. Surprisingly, Netgear’s Nighthawk R6700 performed better than most dual-band routers (some even cost more) at 10 and 25 feet away.

At a distance of 10 feet away, the R6700 delivered the highest throughput (524MB/s), better than the TP-Link Archer C8 (479MB/s), which came in second. The same performance was replicated at 25 feet away, with the R6700 managing to outperform its rivals at both distances.

Overall, the Nighthawk R6700 is capable of delivering class-leading wireless speeds over 802.11ac protocol and is a perfect example of the great improvements made over previous generations. It is affordable, and the performance range is way better. However, while the 802.11ac was the go-tech almost a year ago, it has now matured with fair improvements in performance. That means there are now routers in the market, that cost almost the same, but offer better features.

Netgear AC1750 vs. Netgear Nighthawk AC1900

Somewhat confusingly, Netgear offers two pretty similar router models: the AC1750 and the AC1900, also called the “Nighthawk”.

I debated the Netgear AC1750 vs. the similar-looking and cooler-named Netgear “Nighthawk” AC1900 before I ultimately just went with the 1750 because the additional price of the AC1900 only netted two real differences over the 1750, it has a slightly faster processor (1GHz vs. 800 MHz) and a slightly faster max WiFi speed (1900Mbps vs. 1750Mbps).

That’s really all that is different (besides the cooler name). Those things didn’t really sway me into paying the extra, but the price on the AC1900 fluctuates, so if you see it at a price you like you might as well grab it and enjoy the slightly faster processor and WiFi speeds.

The Nighthawk R6700 is a fantastic router which is undoubtedly fast, and well worth considering if you’re looking for a router with the fastest possible performance in its class, without spending too much. So far, I would not hesitate to recommend it over any other router on the market since it delivers stable speeds over long distances, while remaining cheaper and more useful than routers supporting quad-channel 802.11ac.

Although the software could be better, it’s still useful and the USB 3.0 performance is excellent. All these add to the feeling that the Nighthawk R6700 is worth a tentative recommendation as a router of choice for large homes.

NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk Customer Reviews

“This review is for the R6700 which I purchased in Feb of 2017. The unit worked GREAT for the first 10 months and then started having problems requiring me to reset it several times a week due to not being able to attach to either the 2.4Ghz or the 5Ghz band wirelessly, although the wired connection never failed. With phones, tablets, games and TVs I typically have 15 to 20 devices using the router at any one time, but this unit should be able to handle that many with ease. After trying several fixes (firmware upgrade, assigning IP addresses, changing channels, etc), I finally reached out to Netgear at [email protected] – and they are AMAZING!!

They called me at a time I chose, and I gave them permission to log into my computer to check my router and network. After about 15 to 20 minutes, the level 2 tech decided that my router had a hardware problem and they expedited a new unit (R6700v2) to my door, sent along a return label so I wouldn’t have to pay to ship back my old unit and are still keeping in contact with me to make sure all is well. I put the new unit in service on 1/4/2018 and, of course, we are back to working GREAT. I know it could fail again in 10 months, but I am confident that the Netgear Team will stand behind their product after experiencing how well I have been treated so far. If you are having problems after your 90 day “phone support” window, I urge you to reach out to the Netgear Team at [email protected] and you won’t be disappointed.” …. Read More

“I purchased this router to replace another whose range left a bit to be desired and had a habit of overheating for no apparent reason.

I’ve been very impressed by the range and consistent quality of the connection even in the basement of the house where I had trouble reaching previously. Setup was less trouble than most products where you have to connect your computer to the WAN port, run a half-baked utility, perform three consecutive cartwheels, then plug it into your modem.

My only nitpick was that the DNS redirection wasn’t located in an intuitive place causing a massive 45 second search to properly setup my Pi-Hole. Not a huge deal and is offset by the excellent utility to set a static IP and other administration options which more than makes up for it.” …. Read More

“We have a four-level house with the router in a bedroom in the upper floor which has always meant I got little-to-no signal in my man cave located in the basement. Such is life, I thought for the three years we have lived in this house. Then the Belkin failed recently, and my cable provider recommended this Netgear. I was skeptical, of course, as I figured he sold them. But no, he doesn’t sell any routers, he simply recommended this one. I took his advice and now I have not only a signal in my man cave but fast service at that! The signal travels down three flights of stairs and turns three sharp corners but it somehow finds my laptop down there! And if I ever need a boost, Netgear also sells a companion booster (okay, okay, I’m a techie moron and don’t know the proper term for “booster”!). But now I can write all the Amazon reviews I want from the comfort of my man cave!

Overall, I’m very pleased with the choice.” …. Read More
